Bentwood is bent solid wood. The process of bending wood without it breaking was developed around 1830: the master carpenter Michael Thonet succeeded in using steam to give wood a stable bent shape - steam causes the lignin, which is responsible for the strength of wood, to soften and the piece of wood can be bent. The process is still called the Thonet process after its inventor.
