Bentwood is bent solid wood. The process of bending wood without it breaking was developed around 1830: the master carpenter Michael Thonet succeeded in using steam to give wood a stable bent shape - steam causes the lignin, which is responsible for the strength of wood, to soften and the piece of wood can be bent.
